Too Many Canker Sores

My poor little guy is only 8 and has already had many canker sores in his short lived life. I would say about 6 in the past year. I have researched to why he is continuously developing these. Some things I do know is that they are not contagious the way a cold sore is. I have learned it could be a food allergy, stress and a few other reasons. Researchers say they do not know for sure. What I also know is that he is in pain and i don't like it. This time has been the worst of all. Usually a canker will get smaller in size as the week goes on and end up disappearing all together. This one has gone on for a week now and has doubled in size. I stay on him about not touching and keeping his mouth clean with a salt water rinse. If it does not get better in a few days we may end up taking a trip to the Dr. Anyone that has some advice for us we would be fully grateful. I found this site on kids heath that was some helpful as well. http://kidshealth.org/teen/diseases_conditions/mouth/canker.html#

Salt-and-soda rinses. Use 1 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 tsp salt. Swish and spit 3 or 4 times daily. Sometimes they are associated with constipation (dried prunes are a yummy, easy fix for kiddos) and vitamin deficiencies. Taking a multi-vit daily might help, also L-Lysine and glutamine are some amino acids some people try to treat/ prevent but I am weary about stuff like this in kids. They sure hurt though- poor guy. Some people are just really prone to them (myself included :()

My husband has had them repeatedly since he was a small child. They have been known to get huge. There is a prescription mouthwash that you can get from the dentist or the doctor that helps some.

With Dave it seems to be somewhat but not always to do with consuming alot of orange juice. Sometimes it's nerve triggered. There is a mixture that is liquid benadryl mixed with liquid antacid that you swish in your mouth that sometimes helps too. You can google the mixture recipe.

You got these when you were J age, especially when you took vitamins. These are a few thing I found at the Mayo clinic web site. I know J loves oranges but he might need to stay away from them for a while because of the acid.
Rinse your mouth with salt water, baking soda (dissolve 1 teaspoon of soda in 1/2 cup warm water), diluted hydrogen peroxide or elixir of diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Be sure to spit it out after rinsing.
Cover lesions with a paste made of baking soda.
Try over-the-counter products that contain a numbing agent, such as Orabase-B, Anbesol and Orajel.
Avoid abrasive, acidic or spicy foods that can cause further irritation and pain.
Apply ice to your canker sores or allow ice chips to slowly dissolve over the sores.
Brush your teeth gently, using a soft brush and toothpaste without foaming agents, such as TheraBreath.
You can also dab a small amount of milk of magnesia on your canker sore a few times a day. This can ease the pain and may help the sore heal more quickly. Call his dentist, they have a jel that works wonders. I think it was called oralbase.

I was just going to ditto what's already been said about avoiding acidic foods/drinks. Greg and Moriah both get them, and they pop up more when we have soda.

I used to get canker sores so often as a child. I remember a physician telling my mother to switch my toothpaste to one for sensitive teeth/gums. That helped tremendously and I began getting them less frequently.
A friend of my mother also gave her a little container of acidophiles powder that I would dab onto the sore. It made this nice coating of protection.
Hope this helps,
Hannah
