When we allow the business of our life to take over our time with Christ or becomming lax in our spiritual life, this is sloth. I know there are different degrees of this sin.
After the ezamination of my heart I've recently made the realization that I have slipped into spiritual laziness. Though my slipping has been more of a dip and mostly unintentional, sloth is sloth. ..
.I have continued going about my day with prayer, teaching my children right from wrong and even going to Mass on Sundays. So you may ask why do you see sloth in these days.
What I know is that I have been distracted not fully present in my prayers, my teachings or even my time with Christ in the Mass.
In my exzamination I have spent time thinking over the balance of our lives.
I go to Mass, I pray, I'm a wife, mother, daughter, friend etc. I have a to-do list filled with steps making our weeks go round. I'm a teacher, a photographer, and an author of Blessed Adventures.
Looking at my list I can't help but wonder, how many weeks went past that I thought I was content with this list? Content with the amount of true time I was giving to my spiritual life? How many of us feel this way about our overloaded list, even if its unintentional. We may say "I went to church, so I'm good until next Sunday or I said my prayers so I'm good until we eat a meal or say prayers at bedtime."
(What ever your repetitive prayer schedule may be)
I know I have.
In doing this, I've hurt myself. I've added stress to my days and experienced missed opportunities of a path God was pointing me down.

..What God wants from me and you in our life is him. Him as our center and the core of our everything. Don't just go to church, go and give all of you to him. Don't just pray, talk to God about each of your thoughts throughout the day. You then will hear him. Good things will come your way.
Deligence is that virtue that counterbalances sloth, it gives us self-discipline to work on our relationship with God and others.
.. I have noticed that I do not hear God during times of sloth. I know he is there talking to me, leading me in directions he has planned. When he is not the core of my thoughts and my life, how can I hear him.
I cant, he's not as loud or as clear as he is today.
I cant, he's not as loud or as clear as he is today.
..Today I am dripping wet with the Lord, my sponge is no longer dry. It is full. Full.
I feel his energy, peace, love, and joy.
What a difference taking a good look at your routine can do for you and others as you hear Gods will for your life. If your in a slump think about this post. Examine your life. I know a slump is something hard to climb out of. You may feel too busy or just not carry the ambition to examine your list. That's normal, but you have to take the time. Once you get started you will receive the desire to make God the core of your list. No longer will you have to push yourself. You will be so inspired, surprised, and pleased with the changes that will come. God is so good. He knows what he is talking about. He made you.

Thank you for this window into your heart and thoughts! It is comforting to know I'm not the only one who struggles with this. And it's inspiring to come here and be refreshed, knowing I can be re-energized in Christ if I just surrender myself (and my busy-ness!) to Him.
Sloth- A religious views concerning the need for one to work to support society and further God's plan and work also suggest that, through inactivity, one invites the desire to sin. "For Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do." We all feel lazy sometimes but I don't think your hands are idle that long with 3 children, and all the praise you give our Father through out the day for our blessings. You do so much for your children, especially teaching them first about our Father. I know He is very proud of you. Mom
Oh and by the way a very good post. Mom
Beautiful... Thanks for sharing your heart.
Catherine this is well said. You are such a bright young woman. I am so lucky to have you. Love you Allen
Mom, Thank you. I wanted you to hear this
Sloth being the 7th capital or deadly sin. Some call acedia meaning Spiritual laziness leads us to become lax in our spiritual life. We can let it go for so long that we do not hear the voice of God calling us each day. DILIGENCE, is the virtue that counterbalances sloth. It gives us the self-didcipline to constantly work on our relationship with God and others so that we will see how God is leading us in our everyday lives.
Thank you all for posting. Allen I love you so much. Thank you. Im the blessed one to have such a sweet man leaving me comments as this~
I LOVE this post. You inspire me daily! I'm so thankful to have you as my sister, my best friend. I want to do better in this area of my life. You are right...we all need God in our everyday life...in all parts of our lives throughout the day. Thank you for reminding me of this. Let's help each other be accountable for this...let's help remind each other this is what God wants for our lives. Let's stay focused on Him...our Father!
Love you!
I love you too Liz and feel so blessed to have you as my dear sisiter friend in Christ. Lets do this even more then we have~
Love this, and needed it. I'm so thankful for your words and the time you spend to share your heart and His message.
I've also felt the praise becoming routine. I've been going through the motions, but not pouring out my heart and seeking His.
Praying for a full sponge again, starting tomorrow.
Thank you again for doing His work. You're making a difference. You just did for me.
Thanks for this post. What timing God has, I am sure this spoke to many. Just this past week we had VBS and while I was in His word, studying for class, I wasn't truly in His word. I can tell the difference in my own life.
I think about this alot. I just feel so overwhelmed with the life with three small-ish children sometimes and I admit, I use it as an excuse sometimes, I do...
But I know he has not given me more than I can handle...
Thank you for this reminder.
Well said. Well said. I too, have been reading about the {time} I'm giving to God ... daily, hourly ... and this was just more goodness and exactly what I needed to read!
Have a BLESSED day!
Hey Catherine! How've ya been? thought of you yesterday - and sure enough - reading that post about sloth totally spoke to me - I too do not hear The Lord when I'm being slothful -
thank you for this!
xo+blessings,
Anne Marie
Im so happy that this post was ment for some of you and you were some how lead here to read it. God is so good. Blessings Catherine
Thank you so much for this post! I agree whole-heartedly, and just recently realized the same thing. Now that I am working on these things, I have found things to be so much better!
So glad your spiritual sponge got soaked! I struggle too - knowing that I need to set aside time, one-on-one time, just sit-down quality time. I reach out and pray throughout the day - but, like you point out - we need more than a spinkling shower on the way to school, in the Wal-Mart parking lot or where-ever we catch a quick moment with God - I need to sit thorough soaking, like a powerful rain fall that you don't run away from! Thank you - You blessed me with your message!
So happy this post was something your hearts could use. Blessings Catherine
Hi! I just ran across this post. Funny, God is working through you to get a point across. "taking the time now we will have bigger blessings later." I hadn't ever looked at diligence as being the virtue to banish sloth. What a huge help for me. That you.
Wishing you God's peace,
Dee
Happy you found something here to help! Blessings Catherine
This is a wonderful post. I do love that verse. It struck me to the heart when I read it as well. I am also fond of the companion verse, "The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want." This, I try to remember especially during times of fast and abstinence.
The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want."
Loved this David
