Any day now...

These delicious eggs came from the hens owned by a family in our church. They had more than enough. It has  me thinking about our hens. I was told this fall they would be laying~ Fall is now here and we are waiting~ Come on little chickadees you can do it!

Mine were hatched the end of April, and I began getting eggs a couple of weeks ago. Not all of them are laying yet, tho.
And remember, they need a certain amt. of daylight...can't remember how much offhand. I think 15 hours. I started putting the timer on the light bulb last week, so it goes on at about 5:30 AM.
Are their nesting boxes all fluffed with fresh straw?
Also,if they are free-range, they might be laying elsewhere.
Should be soon!

Thank you! They are in a mid size area along with their coop they can go in and out of. The day light? They are in day light all day, but its not very sunny after being covered by trees. I wonder if this is some of the delay>

When did you get them? Our newer layers started laying about a month ago, but we got ours more towards the beginning of the season.

Do they have enough light? They need at least 13 hours of light a day. So, for most breeds anyhow, you need to give them a lamp September through April or so in their pen. We have a light timer with two cycles on it so the light extends their day a little at night and a little in the a.m. It can't be flourescent by the way, they need warm light.

We got them in the spring. They were little and yes they have light. They come and go in their coop as they want. Im thinking it should be soon. Thanks for the info Cathy~

I hope they start laying eggs for you soon. Fresh eggs are the best. I haven't ate them in so long but my favorite thing to do was collect them from the nests.
